In memory of Mey Hofmann
Deulonder remembers Mey Hofmann a main figure of Catalan cuisine that leaves us prematurely at the age of 69 years
Deulonder’s entire team mourns the passing of Mey Hofmann, victim of a cancer that has taken her on Tuesday May 2 at the age of 69 years. Dynamic and entrepreneur woman, Mey Hofmann created from a stand point of discretion and humility an empire around the kitchen and cooking. On the one hand she opened a number of quality restaurants (The Namesake , a Michelin star since 2004, and successful Taverna Hofmann and Hofmann Bistrot ), without forgetting the pastry shop that bears her name located in the Born district of Barcelona, of which we just talk last month regarding Easter “monas” and their originality. The other was raised as a reference in Catalonia by the hotel school that opened in 1983 and has trained many chefs of international renown, such as twin brothers Sergio and Javier Torres ( Dos Cielos ), Jordi Esteve ( Nectari ) Arnau Bosch ( Bosch Can ), the pastry chef Josep Maria Rodriguez , Aitor Zabala , etc.
The culinary philosophy of Mey Hofmann mixing tradition with innovation
Hofmann had a very broad and diversified training. He studied Economics, interior architecture, gemology and jewelry design, but all gathered around his passion for cooking. Often she explained that their original culinary proposals, which she started cooking at home, had their origins in the German boarding school where he spent summers and where permeated by the love of cooking and pastry made with time and patience. Finally ,what at first was a simple hobby ended up becoming her profession and was a great success. Just say that hundreds of students (an estimated 2,000) have followed her teachings.
Victim of cancer that was diagnosed at the beginning of the year, Hofmann, very sick , could not attend the delivery of the special prize of the Catalan Academy of Gastronomy 2016 on Monday, a recognition that was picked up by her daughter Silvia.
